James Bond Registration

James Bond has been a cinema favourite for around 50 years and although his cars never have private plates, one particular number plate has been the talk of the island of Guernsey.  Officials have slowly auctioned of “O” and “OO” registrations with the view to generating some income for the authorities.  They have been sold at intervals in order to maintain the values and keep up the public demand.  Minister Peter Sirett announced that only a handful had currently been issued that had generated around £100,000 so far however the registration “OO 7″ is likely to sell for a significant amount of money.  The numbers 01,02 and 03 and 001, 002 and 003 have not been issued however, as they are reserved for Guernsey’s bailiff and lieutenant governor.  Although the interest will be huge, the only downside is that the registration number will only be suitable for residents of Guernsey and will not be transferable to the Mainland.

Olympic Car Registrations

With the advent of the Olympic games fast approaching, the DVLA have managed to add another 250 Olympic related car registrations to their already busy auction catalogue for 7th 8th and 9th June this year at the City Hall London.  The DVLA have become official licencees to the games which is a marketing strategy to increase the sales of its car registrations. The advertisements current in the media are drawing attention to the “OG12″ plates that were released for sale at the end of December 2011 in readiness for the new car sales in March 2012. The theme is to represent “Olympic Games 12″ , yet recent sales appear to show that there is very little public interest in the “OG12″ plates. The higher prices for these car registrations coupled with the fact that the twelve plates have a small audience due to the fact they can only be used on brand new cars, mean that they are unlikely to sell very well at all.

Types of Car registrations in the sale.

The auction is usually full of attractive registrations that include prefix registrations, suffix registrations, cherished plates and new style registrations.  Other than the cherished plates, lots of words and names can normally be made from the registrations and this time is no exception. Cherished, or non dated car registrations, generally have a higher starting price at the sale as the audience for that style of plate is usually far higher then the year related plates.

Themed Car registrations.

Car registrations from the sale include MEN 100M which is a great registration number which will be of  interest to anyone fascinated with the highlight of the Olympics, the mens 100 metre race.  MEN 5K, MEN 10K and MEN 20K  are also included in the line up registrations to attract supporters of the 5000, 10000 and 20000 metre races. Other car registrations in the sale with an Olympic theme related to the athletes them selves are SEB 60E, ENN 7S,

DA11 LEY and 11 HOY. It won’t take a genius to work out who the DVLA have in mind for these Car registrations.  There are also around forty plates that include the number 2012 in the sale starting at a cheesy £2012 as the starting price. Its always a good idea to take professional advice before rushing off to the auction and spending hard earned money. Its all too easy to buy a registration at the auction sales without first checking to see what is on the open market. This is a sure fire way of over paying for a private registration. Check our website for the lowest prices on all Car Registrations.

Is this the most expensive Escort ?

Is this the most expensive Ford Escort in the world?  An Essex motorist has spent a fortune modifying his beloved Ford Escort car to the tune of £47,000. That’s not a misprint. He really has spent almost £50,000 making this car a real one off. Its incredible.

Is this the most expensive Escort?

Mark Keeble from Silver End in Essex has changed almost every part of the car. He has added eight amplifiers, almost thirty speakers, an unbelievable six TV screens along with satellite navigation and endless electronic gadgets to make this the most expensive escort ever. The car is so good; it has won him countless prizes at car shows.

His wife rarely drives the car as she spends most of her spare time attending to her horses. Although she says she does enjoy being a passenger in the Escort she would secretly prefer a BMW convertible. Some people may think Mark is mad spending that sort of money but he thinks it’s all worthwhile. People will stop and admire the car and they are amazed that under the gleaming bodywork and the expensive imported wheels from the United States lies the humble Ford Escort. Not so humble when you consider its probably the most expensive Escort.

The most Expensive Escort in the UK ?

Mark has always been a car nut and has already transformed other cars in the past and says that this one is still a work in progress as there are always things to improve it. The car is dedicated to his mum who passed away and it is his tribute to her. Surely it must be the most expensive escort in the world.

Famous Number Plates

Over the years, there have been many famous celebrity number plates on the roads of the UK. Probably, the most famous is A1. This registration number is reputed as being the very first number plates ever issued and has been on many cars over the years. The Dunlop Rubber Company famously owned it in the sixties and you would probably expect it to be on a Rolls Royce or a Bugatti Veyron yet it now adorns a Mini Cooper car.

There are many celebrities who have personalised number plates and those plates are quite well known. Sir Alan Sugar who needs no introduction has AMS 1 on his Rolls Royce. The letters AMS obviously represent his initials of Alan Michael Sugar. They are also the first three letters of his old company Amstrad or Alan Michael Sugar Trading.

More well known number plates

Paul Daniels, the well-known magician and television personality has MAG 1C number plates. The plate was a reissued number plate given out in error by the DVLC back in the early nineteen eighties. Paul purchased the number plates and at one time had it on his Ferrari car, however it is now on an Isuzu Trooper jeep.

The well-known entertainer Max Bygraves owned the number plates MB 1. Mr Bygraves is well known for his Royal Variety performances and in fact holds the record for the most appearances there. A record that is unlikely to be broken. Mercedes Benz once offered him an undisclosed sum of money to purchase the registration from him but he declined apparently saying that he would never sell it.  He did actually sell it though to a number plate dealer who subsequently sold it on to a member of the public. MB 1 now sits very proudly on a Rolls Royce Silver Seraph.

Personalised Number Plates

Sir Stirling Moss, the successful motor racing star of the nineteen fifties and sixties has two special number plates. He has SM 7 and 7 SM. The SM 7 is currently on an Aston Martin Cygnet yet the other registration number is not currently on a vehicle but held on a retention certificate. As Sir Stirling lives in the centre of London, he says that he does not need a car and ironically doesn’t actually own one himself. His wife Susie owns the Aston.

Lord Brabazon of Tara owned FLY 1. The registration was appropriate for him as he held the number 1 certificate granted by the Royal Aero Club for pilots. As First English Aviator, what more appropriate registration number than FLY 1. A pioneer motorist and aviator, Lord Brabazon’s other “Flying Firsts” included the Daily Mail £1000 prize for flying a circular mile in an all English built machine way back in 1909. The personalised number plates are now on a Bentley Continental motor car.

6 EEK Private Number Plates

An Essex Businessman is a self confessed geek.  A computer geek to be more specific, and in fact he is so proud of it that he has bough a private number plate reading 6 EEK to prove it. The plate cost him over £10000 so he must be proud.

The Essex based Businessman, who has built some of the most complicated software systems for London City traders,  has worked tirelessly at the cutting edge of the industry and  is now able to enjoy the fruits of his labour by displaying 6 EEK on his motorcycle. Although he is a very successful self made businessman and is very serious about his business, he clearly has a sense of humour as well.  He said in an interview with DVLA “Everyone with a serious involvement with computers is labelled as a geek though, but of course, they’re not. But when I saw that the DVLA were about to sell the registration number 6 EEK at auction, then I knew that I just had to buy it.”  Whilst he enjoys the fact that the plate is a bit of fun and appeals to his sense of humour there is also an alterior motive in acquiring such a recognisable number plate. Advertising. Since having the new number plate, he has been approached by other business people who have arranged meeting with him as a result If you have an interesting story like this, why not send us an email with a picture if possible and we will post it on our website for you.

How To Choose DVLA New Style Number Plates

Choosing DVLA New style number plates is a quite simple exercise. Just like when choosing a prefix style registration, the most important thing to consider is the age of the car you are buying for. The reason that this is so important when choosing DVLA  New style number plates is because you cannot make a vehicle look newer than it actually is. Its not quite so simple just knowing what year the car was manufactured as the DVLA have now made things very complicated.

DVLA New style number plates

For example, if you have a car made in 2003, it could be a “52″ plate car or a “03″ plate car or even a “53″ plated car. It is now more important than ever to know the precise date of first registration so that the number plate dealer can assist you with your DVLA new style number plates without a problem.

An example of DVLA New style number plates

When you have established the actual date of registration, the next step is to choose the letters to appear in the DVLA new style number plates. A very popular choice with this type of plate is to have both his and hers initials. So for example, assuming the car was registered as XC03 VBF this would mean that it was registered between 1st March 2003 and 31st August 2003 and so John Smith and Mary Veronica Smith could have JS03 MVS to represent both their names on the registration plate. In fact they could have any DVLA new style number plates with the same letters providing that the numbers in the middle were issued prior to the “03″ plate.

DVLA New style number plates

The order of the numbers issued in chronological order are 51, 02, 52, 03, 53, 04, 54, 05, 55, 06, 56, 07, 57, 08, 58, 09, 59, 10, 60, 11 and 61 up until this point. The change of number is made each March and September and it’s a simple calculation of adding 50 to the current release to determine the next in line.

Popular DVLA New style number plates

Popular combinations of DVLA New style number plates letters and numbers include the OO07 plates to resemble the James Bond theme and lots of drivers plump for the MR or XX prefix part of number plate as it more striking. Some combinations have been withdrawn from sale by the DVLA so that they can be sold at auction where they attract much higher sums of money.  Number plates such as XX51 NGH and DH11 LON have recently been sold for huge sums of money. Although the DVLA new style number plates are not as popular with motorists as the prefix style, they will be around for the next 40 years so eventually they will grow on us.

What does CNDA mean?

If, when you have been browsing the internet looking at buying or selling a personalised number plate, you may have come across the initials CNDA.  The letters stand for the Cherished Numbers Dealers Association. The association was founded way back in 1971 when it became clear that there was no overseer to the private number plate industry. There was no association in place to provide protection to the public when buying or selling valuable car registrations as at that point, the DVLC as it was called back then, were not active in the sale of private number plates. As a result, members of the public, or dealers on occasions had no one to turn to in times of dispute. Credit cards were not in use for over the phone payments where you could be protected by the card issuer so it was clear that an organisation was required.

Bear in mind, that in those days, there were very few companies actively trading in the sale of personalised number plates. In fact there were no more than a handful of recognised traders in the entire country but by 1985 there were nineteen number plate dealers registered with the CNDA. Of those nineteen only two remain today. Nowadays, there are more and more number plate dealers, or traders, but the CNDA membership has dwindled to just eleven.

Who can join the CNDA?

Any number plate dealer can apply for membership to the CNDA. Provided that the company has been trading for a reasonable length of time and all other members are happy with the application, then all that is required is a fee to join and then the company concerned are eligible to receive the benefits on offer from the R.M.I.F. as well as the CNDA themselves.

CNDA rules

All members must adhere to strict guidelines set out by the CNDA as well as the DVLA to maintain their membership. The members are closely monitored on a regular basis to ensure that the rules and regulations set out are not broken. The CNDA is in close consultation with the D.V.L.A. at all times in an attempt to improve the service offered to the public. Unlike unregulated companies, the CNDA members should only advertise plates that are known to be available for sale. Although that may sound obvious, there are companies that will advertise private number plates without permission of the seller. In cases like these the sale is quite likely to fall through and you may have a fight on to retrieve your money back. This is where dealing with a C.N.D.A. member will give confidence to both the buyer and the seller as the organisation can step in to resolve any dispute.

CNDA valuation service.

A valuation service is another facility that is available through the organisation. As it is quite difficult to value a number plate due to the many different styles and ages of plate to consider, a CNDA valuation that is given is an assessment gleaned from the value given by all the members so this is deemed a more genuine value for private number plates. CNDA valuations are widely recognised by insurance companies, the police and legal institutions.

First DVLA Auction of 2012

Another year, and another DVLA auction. The venue for the first auction of 2012 was the Stratford Manor Hotel in Warwickshire.  Although the venue is a central location, it was very poorly attended yet again by members of the public. In fairness though, this was probably due to the fact that a large percentage of bidders now use the Internet facilities provided by SMA, The Scottish Motor Auction team responsible for running the sale.

DVLA Auction bidding options

Using these online facilities enables buyer to bid at the sale at the click of a button. Its not as good as being there although it does save a lot of money on travelling expenses and accommodation if you are considering bidding on each of the 3 days of the sale. The other methods of bidding are, of course, attending the sale, leaving a postal bid or using a company in the industry to arrange a call back so that you can bid live over the phone.

All the DVLA Auction registrations were auctioned off in alphabetical order so there were quiet periods in the sale where the less popular combinations of letters sold for lower amounts and therefore kept the sale moving quickly.

As the more popular two and two registrations, as they are called, are starting to dry up due to the frequency of the auction sales, some of the more popular combinations are now appearing with three digit number such as 700 RB and 400 CL for example. These private number plates appear more attractive than the nondescript two digit ones. There appeared to be more and more names at this DVLA auction sale such as ART 111R to resemble ARTHUR, CH11 PPY for a carpenter perhaps, and EAM 8N which looked a lot like EAMON and they are starting to make significant hammer prices. In fact the most expensive private number plate sold at the sale was a name.

Highest prices at DVLA Auction

The registration plate DH11 LON was sold for sixty one thousand pounds on the hammer. With the addition of the buyer’s premium of eight percent and the VAT, which needed to be added, the total price of this registration amounted to over seventy nine thousand pounds, and JO11 NNY made nearly £30,000.

Other high value plates that were sold at this DVLA auction were 55 O, which we assume was bought by a Ferrari owner for his Ferrari 550, that made almost forty seven thousand pounds once the additional fees had been added.
